FR6 Lithium Batteries for a High-Pressure Car Washing Pump in Cold Weather

A high-pressure cleaning equipment manufacturer in the southern United States needed a lightweight battery solution capable of powering a 1.5A portable pump, including during periods when temperatures may fall below -20°C.

Background / Challenge

The customer specializes in high-pressure car washing equipment and was developing a portable pump for automotive cleaning applications. The pump needed a dependable primary battery solution that could balance power output, portability, storage life, and cold-weather reliability. Although the customer is based in the southern United States, the equipment may encounter three to four months of severe cold weather each year. Temperatures can occasionally drop below -20°C, creating demanding operating conditions for the battery.

Application High-pressure washing pump
Operating Current Approximately 1.5A
Battery Configuration Four FR6 cells
Target Temperature Below -20°C

Solution

After reviewing the application, operating current, environmental conditions, and expected use, PKCELL recommended a configuration of four FR6 lithium iron disulfide batteries.

FR6 is an AA-size primary lithium battery based on Li-FeS₂ chemistry. For this project, its combination of current capability, low-temperature performance, lightweight construction, and storage characteristics made it a practical match for the portable pump.

The recommended four-cell FR6 configuration was selected to support pump activation and sustained operation under both relatively high current demand and extremely cold conditions.

Key advantages for the pump application

  • Strong discharge capability: Supports the relatively high current required by the pump.
  • Better cold-weather performance: More suitable for demanding low-temperature use than conventional alkaline batteries.
  • Stable operating voltage: Helps reduce the risk of excessive voltage drop during pump startup.
  • Low battery weight: Supports the portability of the finished car washing equipment.
  • Long storage life and low self-discharge: Useful for equipment that may be stored between seasonal uses.
  • Outdoor application suitability: Designed for applications where reliability across changing environmental conditions is important.

Sample evaluation and next step

At the time of this case study, the project had entered the sample testing stage. PKCELL was supporting the customer with test-result reviews and any technical adjustments identified during evaluation. Following successful validation, the project was expected to proceed toward mass production.

Why PKCELL?

The project required both a suitable battery and responsive technical coordination. The customer first contacted PKCELL through its official website and continued the initial discussion through WhatsApp.

By collecting the pump's current requirement, cell configuration, temperature range, and operating expectations early in the process, PKCELL was able to recommend a focused sample solution without unnecessary delays.

01
Fast requirement review
Sales and technical teams reviewed the application, current draw, environmental conditions, and battery expectations.
02
One-week sample preparation
PKCELL prepared and shipped the samples within one week so the customer could begin evaluation promptly.
03
Direct engineering discussion
During the customer's facility visit in China, both teams reviewed current demand, discharge performance, and low-temperature use.

Application-focused technical support

PKCELL's recommendation was based on the pump's real load and operating environment rather than cell size alone. This application-focused process helps manufacturers evaluate battery chemistry, discharge behavior, environmental limits, and product design requirements together.

The on-site meeting also gave the customer direct access to PKCELL's sales and engineering teams, creating a clearer path from sample evaluation to technical adjustment and potential volume production.
